Frequently Asked Questions

I have a lot of doubts about Christianity and don’t think anyone will change that.  What makes you so sure I will like your church?

We think you’ll like it because we are honest about our own doubts.  We believe that doubt is a natural byproduct of faith.  The Bible itself tells us to walk by faith, not by sight… and doing so usually means there will be some doubt present as we just aren’t seeing it.  There are also some things in the Bible, and some things God does, or leaves undone, that just don’t add up.  We believe that God has a plan for all the things that don’t make sense to us, and that He loves and accepts us as we are. As is the case in many other areas in life where doubt creeps in – relationships, career, parenting, health etc. – it’s not the amount of faith or doubt that matters, but what we choose to do with it.

Is your church affiliated with a denomination?

We are an independent & autonomous church that values our affiliation with the Sanctuary Church in Oakville, Ontario, as well as the North American Missions Board (NAMB).

I do not consider myself a “Christian”, but I am interested in your church.  Do I have to believe or live like a church person to come to your church?

Not at all!  One of the things we love about Jesus and the early church is that people of all kinds of backgrounds flocked to hear the message Jesus preached.  Jesus had a high comfort level with people who were FAR from being “Christian”… and we seek to have the same comfort level.

My family is currently attending another church, but we are thinking about switching churches.  Does your church welcome people who already go to church?

Yes – however – if you are considering switching churches, we ask that you do so in a way that honours the leadership and community of the church you are leaving.  Before making any decisions, we encourage you to speak with your pastor and invite him/her into your story, and leave with the blessing of your faith community.

What happens when people attending your Sunday services want to go deeper in their faith?  Won’t they want something more than a service geared for beginners?

We encourage everyone at our church to be asking “What is the next step in my faith journey?”. We have identified a number of likely steps for beginners, veterans, and everyone in between, to go deeper in their faith:

Return the next Sunday and learn more.

Bring your friends too!

Attend one of our mid-week Connect Groups.

Learn more about the Bible. Click here for more info about Connect Groups.

Volunteer to serve on one of our Sunday morning teams.

Our relationships grow deeper and our faith grows stronger when we serve alongside each other and allow God to use us to help others in their faith journey. Click here for more info on volunteering.

Teach a 10 minute Bible study at one of our Connect Groups.

One of the best ways to learn, is to teach!

Commit to personal spiritual disciplines

These include Bible reading, prayer, fasting, giving, etc.
Do you have any plans for offering an alternate service time on Sunday mornings?

Yes! It is our goal to introduce a second identical service on Sunday mornings as soon as we are able to do so. This will offer more flexibility to people who wish to attend a service at an earlier time, as well as allow our children’s and junior high programs to be better resourced, as volunteers attend one service, and serve in the other.

Are tax receipts issued for donations made to Starting Point Church, and can I make donations online?

Yes! Our sponsoring church, The Sanctuary Church in Oakville, is looking after all of our banking until we are granted our own charitable status.  100% of funds donated go directly to the General Fund of Starting Point Church to help us create a church that unchurched people love to attend!  Click here to learn more or to donate online.
