Let’s Start From The Top
Starting Point Church originally started as an idea. After spending 10+ years in established churches as a youth pastor, founding Pastor Mike Hauser started to feel called to plant a church that was designed for people who don’t usually go to church, as well as a church that spoke the language of the next generation. Mike, and a team of 9 people, began meeting in a living room in the fall of 2012 asking God to do what only God can do: help a new church succeed in a day in age where church attendance is in decline and in a city where more than 90% of the population does not attend church. Starting Point’s launch team prayerfully decided that our values would be to be accepting, fun, practical, and inspiring.
Starting Point Church hosted its first public gathering on Sunday November 25th, 2012. Two more preview services were held each month before Starting Point launched regular Sunday services on Sunday, February 10th, 2013 with 126 people in attendance.
In April, we held an Easter service at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre that reached 220 people. Our regular Sunday services were rotating between 3 different Catholic school gymnasiums in Burlington, and it became apparent that one permanent location was necessary to sustain continuous growth. So, in June 2013, Starting Point moved to Tansley Woods Community Centre. During that summer, we ran our very first summer day camp with more than 50 kids attending day trips to attractions all over Southern Ontario.
In October 2013, Starting Point Church moved to the Silver City movie theatre near Burloak and the QEW. This new location allowed us to have ample space for all of our needs and has also been helpful in creating an environment where everyone can feel comfortable and at ease.
After one year in the movie theatre however, we found that the ability to create the sense of community and relational tone we desired was inhibited by the movie theatre setting. We also found that the time constraints of being in a movie theatre were too restrictive, and we wanted to have the freedom to start and end our services later in the morning (something we think will help us reach more people). So, in November 2014, we made the decision to return to Tansley Woods Community Centre. We now have even more space booked at Tansley Woods than we did previously, and we believe this location will allow us to continue to grow as we serve our community.
